Wine Vocabulary Terms
Learning some wine terminology is the first step to increasing your knowledge of wine. Here are a few vocabulary terms to help you with your wine reviews, or just day to day conversation.
Finish - Describes how long the taste lingers on you palate after you swallow your wine.
Green - Indicates that the wine is made from unripe grapes, or the grapes were picked when they were young which throws off a taste of grassiness or vegetal. This characteristic is sometimes seen as a flaw, yet in some sauvignon blancs it adds to it's flavor.
Herbaceous - Used to describe wines with aromas of herbs such as basil, dill, lavender, oregano, and thyme.
Oaked - Term used to describe the woody aroma and taste. In white wine it can add aromas and flavors of butter, coconut and vanilla. In red wines it adds flavors of baking spices and vanilla.
Pruney - Describes a wine that was made from over ripe grapes which produces a smell of prunes and can sometimes be because by oxidation through a bad cork.
Silky - Used to describe a wine with a creamy to velveety mouthfeel.
Soft - Describes a wine that is round, very fruity with low acidity and tannins.
Spicy - Aromas of cinnamon, and usually black or white pepper, found in most Zinfandels.
Tight - Wine that is not ready to consumed.
Unoaked - Also known as "unwooded"; used to describe whites more crisp with lemony flavors and mineral notes, while the reds can be some what acidic.
